Extreme Flight.... STOL CH 701

The following is from Éric Soulé De Lafont of Saint-Gaudens, France. He built a STOL CH 701 with a custom taildragger gear configuration specifically for operation on the glaciers on the European Alps. His STOL CH 701 aircraft is equipped with a Continental C-90 engine and retractable wheel skis.  Following are several photos and a short report on flying the STOL CH 701...

e-soule1.jpg (22263 bytes) "Thanks to this aircraft, I've made the most spectacular flights in my life in France as well as in Spain and to the borders of Switzerland and Italy.

"The retractable wheel-skis have allowed me to make more than 600 landings on snow in the Pyrenees mountains and Glaciers in the Alps. The STOL [short take-off and landing] performance of the STOL CH 701 are wonderful in the extreme conditions of high-altitude mountains.

"With a little practice, you can systematically do perfect mountain landings that would be impossible with other aircraft, even on 30 - 40% slopes and in all snow conditions (icy, wet, powder...).  You can land the aircraft with a precision of just a few meters (an excellent safety feature), something that would be impossible to achieve with other aircraft.

"In the Pyrennees mountains by Spain there are "domes" of snow that only the STOL CH 701 can access.  In the Alps, I've landed on many of Mont Blanc's and Oisan's glaciers. In the summer I land on high-altitude "prairies" (short, rough mountain fields).

"I've also flown a lot throughout Spain - there are many short picturesque runways made for ultralights - the shortest level runway that I've used was 100 meters long!

"I fly the STOL CH 701 from my small private grass strip: 80 meters long with a 14-degree slope.  The mountains make for difficult wind conditions - a lot of crosswinds, and sometimes tailwinds for landings and take-offs.   As a mountain pilot, I really appreciate the safety of the STOL CH 701. Full-flap approaches are great fun and a fantastic safety feature, allowing me to land in 15 to 20 meters (and oftentimes less).  Everyone I've flown with from this challenging grass strip has been astounded by the qualities of the STOL CH 701.

Since my second child is on the way, I'm now very interested in the STOL CH 801 - knowing that the basic design is the same as the STOL CH 701."
