Workshop in Brazil: October 2007

Grupo Zodiac Brasil Grupo STOL Brasil

Roberto Brito, of AirFox Utraleves, hosted a Rudder Assembly Workshop at his hangar in Atibaia, Brazil on October 12 to 14, 2007, to provide participants with hands-on experience in building the Zodiac XL and STOL CH 701 light aircraft.

The workshop was modeled after the popular Zenith Aircraft factory workshop, where participants build their own vertical tail section (rudder) over two days to gain an introduction to building their own airplane.  Since most builders in Brazil scratch-build their own aircraft from plans-only, this workshop also covered the making of the actual parts (before assembling them).

Sebastien Heintz of Zenith Aircraft Company attended the workshop to meet with Brazilian builders and pilots, and returned with the following photos:  Click on the thumbnail images for full-size picture.

Introduction and orientation at the start of the workshop.  More than 20 participants attended the three day workshop.

Getting started...

Since this was a scratch-building workshop, the rudder parts were first carefully drawn out using the Zenith drawings and manuals.

Carefully measuring and plotting the parts

...and then cut out from flat aluminum sheets.

All parts were hand-cut using sheet-metal snips.

The workshop was held in the AirFox Utraleves hangar in the city of Atibaia, which is located 65 km. from São Paulo, Brazil.

The custom gull-wing system limits headroom and makes cabin entry and exit somewhat more difficult.  Roberto's next aircraft will use a forward hinge canopy system.
